Contributing to healthy diets for the people of Sierra Leone

Actu de l'Iram

The Government of Sierra Leone, the European Union, the FAO and Agrinatura are collaborating on the implementation of the Sustainable Agrifood System Intelligence (SASI) initiative, which aims to help countries translate their national objectives and plans into operational programs, policies, and investments that strengthen the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of their agrifood systems. Sierra Leone is one of three pilot countries for this initiative.

Within the framework of this project, IRAM, in partnership with the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute and CIRAD, is conducting action research to identify pathways for the transition towards healthy, inclusive, and sustainable agri-food systems for the Sierra Leonean population.

The methodological approach began with a territorial analysis to ensure it is based on the realities on the ground. The project promotes the facilitation and stimulation of multi-stakeholder dialogue at different levels, seeking to build upon local evidence to inform national policies at the central level. The research focused on a key food system transition challenge that was identified at the start of the process: ‘How to ensure that the Feed Salone Strategy contributes to healthy diets for the people of Sierra Leone?’

The results of this initiative have led to recommendations aimed at the successful implementation of the flagship agricultural policy of Sierra Leonean government, particularly in achieving its objective of alleviating hunger and malnutrition in the country.
